2022 SUMMER SEASON
GLORIOUS CLASSICS
MOZART Piano Quartet No. 2 in E-flat major, K. 493
Carl FRÜHLING Trio for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano in A minor, Op. 40
BRAHMS Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op. 115
The Olympic Music Festival returns to Port Townsend after 2 virtual seasons with a thrilling in-person program featuring Mozart’s operatic Piano Quartet in E-flat major and two chamber music works featuring star clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein. Brahms wrote his nostalgic Clarinet Quintet for clarinetist Richard Mühfeld, who inspired the composer to emerge from retirement and write a series of chamber music works for the instrument. Reminiscent of Brahms and Schumann, Austrian composer Carl Frühling's Trio was published in 1925 and is a rarely heard treasure of the clarinet chamber music repertoire.

BEETHOVEN, BRAHMS, & BLOCH
BEETHOVEN Piano Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 16
Ernest BLOCH Piano Quintet No. 1 (1923)
BRAHMS String Quintet No. 2 in G major, Op. 111
Beethoven’s only mature piano quartet is based on his quintet for piano and winds, which was a nod to Mozart’s sublime composition for the same instrumentation years earlier. The Swiss born American composer Ernest Bloch is most famous for bringing the mystic colors of Jewish music to the concert stage and his Piano Quintet No. 1 is a monumental composition that could be a precursor and influence to the film scores of the legendary films of the 1950s. Brahms wrote his String Quintet in G major as his final composition before retiring at the height of his powers. The composition pushes each instrument to their limits as uses the sound of five parts to imitate a full orchestra.

INTIMATE LETTERS
HAYDN Piano Trio in F-sharp minor, Hob. XV:26
MENDELSSOHN String Quartet in F minor, Op. 80
BRAHMS Piano Quartet No. 2 in A major, Op. 26
Explore some of the most personal works written by three titans of chamber music. Haydn was the father of the piano trio and his work written in the rare key of F-sharp minor evokes the drama later heard in the music of his student Ludwig van Beethoven. Felix Mendelssohn wrote his String Quartet in F minor as he grieved the unexpected death of his beloved sister Fanny. Johannes Brahms wrote his Piano Quartet in A major with an astonishing symphonic scale paired with some of his most personal and lyrical melodies.
